Remember these characters? You know! Wallace, Just and old man (pronounced Justin Oldman?), Shun, Fuka, and Dr. Sadler? They are in at least one Street Fighter game each. Right? Right?!
Right… No they’re not. And right, we don’t want to remember them either.
Well, okay, maybe Fuka…
No…No!! Not even then. Seriously though, with all do respect to the artists and voice actors who brought these original characters to life, what the writers of the Street Fighter animated movies these characters appeared in did not seem to understand is that in a Street Fighter movie, fans don’t want to spend more than a minute, if that, with characters that are not from the game. No significant amount of screen time spent on original characters is in part why Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie was so successful. At best we get a couple of minutes with the INTERPOL investigators to move the plot along.
And we are doing the same in our book. From the very beginning we set the rule that only Street Fighter characters that are playable in the game would get significant page time in our book. and the camera, if you will, will stay on our favourite couple as much as possible. After all, if you can’t write a Ryu X Chun-Li story with a cast like this…
What are you doing writing a Street Fighter story anyway?
More next time!
