We were walking home the other day when one of us remembered an old Ruffles potato chips commercial. The commercial was set on the arctic plain, and an Eskimo was eating Ruffles potato chips from a bag of them. His friend asks him for a chip, and the Eskimo stops munching for a moment to say…
We chuckled at the memory, but it also made us think. On the day we approach CAPCOM and UDON with our comic they could of course tell us…
And their chief reason could be that if they accept our book, what about the next guy who comes along with a book shipping Street Fighter characters? If we let you in, there could be no end to the amount of people who try to ship Street Fighter characters and get their comics supported by us.
At first we thought this reason could be a real challenge to our book, but then we thought about it and realised while more shipping books involving other Street Fighter characters would be…
They’re also next to impossible because by accepting our book, UDON/CAPCOM would set a bar. Any book after ours would need to be BETTER than our book. It would have to have better art, a better story, better EVERYTHING! Is that possible? Hell yes! But what isn’t possible is CAPCOM accepting any other partner for Ryu or Chun-Li except each other. No other pairing has a chance!
The other popular pairings for Ryu and Chun-Li, Ryu/Sakura and Chun-Li/Vega run a very distant second or third in both popularity and the public consciousness. Plus, if anyone takes a book about either pairing to CAPCOM, they are going to have to justify how a North American audience would like to see Ryu pairing up with a character who is perceived by people outside the fan base as far younger than he is, and still wearing a high school uniform. Or they are going to have to explain why a noble character like Chun-Li would have any interest in a homicidal maniac like Vega. The fans of these pairings might be cool with these elements, but the general North American public–the people who may buy the book beyond the regular Street Fighter fan base? Yeah, good luck with them.
And yes, we are aware that Ryu/Sakura is gaining a little ground in the latest UDON book, but until we see the two of them share a mutually enjoyed kiss, we shall battle on, and even afterward if it comes to that. Because whether UDON makes Ryu/Sakura happen or not, it’s still just…
And we wager the general North American public would agree. Success for Ryu/Sakura or not, people will still want to see a Ryu/Chun-Li book more so than Ryu and Sakura together.
It’s a no-brainer really. The idea of Ryu and Chun-Li together has been in the public consciousness since Street Fighter II first hit the arcades back in 1991–almost 30 years! Ryu and Chun-Li have appeared together more often in merchandise than any other two Street Fighter characters. Simply put, no other Street Fighter character set has Ryu and Chun-Li’s level of exposure to the public. We not only want to see Ryu and Chun-Li together on our Street Fighter swag, we’ve come to expect it! Ryu for the boys. Chun-Li for the girls. Or Chun-Li even more so for the boys! Heh. Don’t believe us? When was the last time you saw a pair of official Sakura or Vega shoes? Never, that’s when.
Gimme some 糖 baby!
And here’s the clincher… Unlike other Street Fighter pairings out there, the idea of Ryu and Chun-Li as a couple has already happened on the planet in official print…twice! Yes, the North American Malibu comic was terrible, and we know very little about the Chinese Man Hua. But for them to exist, CAPCOM had to give an OK to both directly or perhapas indirectly (foreign licensing). In fact, comic collectors still seek copies of the Chinese Man Hua today.
Can you imagine how the public would react if it was announced that a book finally putting Ryu and Chun-Li together was coming out officially? Unlike the current Street Fighter titles, far more collectors both inside and outside the Street Fighter fan base would rush to pick the book up because for both gaming and comics it would be quite the event, one hoped for for a very long time. Maybe not on the level of the wedding of Superman and Lois Lane, but there would still be some impressive sales numbers. And hey, people who buy the book to hate it are still money in the bank too!
So, do we, CAPCOM, and UDON have to worry about the next guy if they accept our book? Only, if he comes along with another Ryu/Chun-Li story better than ours in every way. Why? Because there’s just not enough money potential in any other pairing compared to Ryu and Chun-Li. And as we all know, companies love money. And if somebody does come along with a Ryu/Chun-Li book better than ours, we’ll happily pass the torch…if UDON/CAPCOM gives us one to pass. Why? Because a better Ryu/Chun-Li book is a success for all Ryu/Chun-Li fans, and we can’t wait to read it!
More next time!
