Happy Birthday, Ryu!
You’re 49 years old. Of course you don’t look a day over 27. Oh, and Street Fighter IV (vanilla) is five years old now. Where does the time go?
Ever since I threw my first Hadoken with him years ago in the 7-11 in my hometown back when Street Fighter didn’t have any roman numerals after it, I’ve had respect for Ryu as a character. He wasn’t like those DC or Marvel super-powered heroes. His “powers” were the result of his dedication to his training. And he didn’t run around saving the world. Not that there is anything wrong with saving the world, but as someone who read a lot of Justice League, a character who could command ki not running to a phone booth (do we still have phone booths?) to change his clothes and save someone was very different.
So, what did we get Ryu, this different kind of character, for his birthday. Y’know… besides a girlfriend…
We got him… a little technological savvy and composure.
One of the frequent elements in Ryu/Chun-li fanfics is Ryu’s ignorance when it comes to technology. We’ve toned that down a little in our version of Ryu. He can Skype and use a cellphone now when he needs to. Is he calling or texting every five minutes and on social media all the time like the rest of us? NO WAY! But he values being able to stay in touch with his friends.
Another character element which appears frequently in Ryu/Chun-li stories is Ryu becoming a bit of a bumbler when it comes to love. Not here. Instead he is quiet and thoughtful. He thinks before he acts, and when he doesn’t know how to handle a situation, he finds out how. And…he knows a dumb course of action when he sees one.
Our story is not a romantic comedy. It is a romantic/action story, with some serious surprises. The Ryu/Chun-li relationship we are building is one where both characters enter the ring of love at no disadvantage. Ryu and Chun-li are both ready for someone else in their lives, they just didn’t know it would be each other. Once our story is over, Ryu and Chun-li will be a couple who can communicate volumes to each other with just a look at one another from across a room–they will know and respect each other that much. And If they are in a difficult situation, they will be able to work flawlessly as a team to overcome it thanks to their combined wisdom and experience. They do not save each other, but they do know each other’s limits and are there for one another as they hit them. Ryu is not from Mars. Chun-li is not from Venus. They are from…the same game!
More next time!
Aw heck… More now. Here are the first five pages of our comic all ready to go….
